Marine Military Academy Embraces Smart Grid Technology To Help Keep Texas Grid Stable
Plano, TX (PRWEB) November 10, 2010
Vedero Software and Cirro Energy Services have teamed to provide the Marine Military Academy with an automated approach to reduce energy usage during emergency events on the Texas electric grid. This results in economic benefits to the Military Marine Academy and reliability benefits to the Texas electric grid during power shortages.
Marine Military Academy, a private college preparatory military school for young men, will participate in demand response programs at the institution’s Harlingen, Texas campus. For example, the Marine Military Academy participated in Cirro Energy Services’s proprietary 4CP (“Four Coincidental Peak”) price response program for several months this summer and was able to successfully curtail more than 30% of the campus’s aggregated load from 17 buildings to avoid critical peak electricity costs during record summer temperatures. In early 2011, the Marine Military Academy plans on participating in the ERCOT Emergency Interruptible Load Service (EILS) program and will automatically curtail energy in response to electric grid emergencies.
Marine Military Academy will curtail electricity automatically on demand using pre-defined curtailment scenarios utilizing Vedero Software. By committing to reduce electric load from the grid in emergency situations, Marine Military Academy is providing immediate relief to the grid as a clean alternative to running stand-by power generators, as well as helping to reduce the need for more power plants. In exchange for its participation, Marine Military Academy will receive compensation through several demand response programs. With just 10 minutes notification prior to a demand response event, intelligent automation is essential to ensure that the load is curtailed as committed, while still considering the needs of the students and faculty in the 18 buildings across the 142-acre campus.
“Marine Military Academy is a progressive institution, and we are always looking for new, innovative ways to become more efficient,” said Stephen Cheney, Brigadier General, U. S. Marine Corps (Retired), and President, Marine Military Academy. “Automating demand response through Vedero Software and Cirro Energy Services offered us the opportunity to demonstrate leadership in energy efficiency as well as do something that is good for the environment and our neighbors here in South Texas.”
Vedero Software is a leading provider of software for automated demand response, and Cirro Energy Services is an expert in energy management, demand response, and renewable energy consulting services. The companies have teamed up to provide Marine Military Academy a way to participate in additional demand response programs seeking to reduce load during summer peak demand periods, including a Commercial Load Management program sponsored by Marine Military Academy’s local utility, and Cirro Energy Services proprietary Four Coincidental Peaks (4CP) automated service.
“We applaud the Marine Military Academy for its vision and commitment to energy efficiency and demand response,” said Michael Cozzi, director of Cirro Energy Services. “The automation delivered through Cirro Energy Services’s integrated solution with Vedero Software will deliver a significant source of revenue as well as sustainable cost savings to the Academy.”
Vedero Software provides a robust platform that ensures maximization of demand response events, while maintaining occupant comfort through existing Building Automation Systems. Cirro Energy Services advises clients how to optimally participate in demand response programs in electric markets across the nation. Additionally, Cirro Energy Services leads the market in predicting and informing clients of the likelihood of emergency and economic events occurring so that they can generate maximum revenue and cost savings without disrupting operations.
About Marine Military Academy
Marine Military Academy is an all-boys boarding school offering college preparatory and Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps programs to boys in grades 8 through 12 and a postgraduate year. The Academy was founded in 1965 by Captain William A. Gary, businessman and retired Marine Corps Reservist, who believed that Marine Corps concepts of leadership and discipline were adaptable to preparatory school education. In 1965, he and other former Marine officers opened a school in Harlingen, when a former US Air Force Base became available. The school aims to provide a wholesome, patriotic, and invigorating atmosphere in which students are inspired towards maximum achievement. Academic excellence is the first priority while also stressing the development of character, leadership and esprit de corps and a strong devotion to country, through values and principles derived from the U. S. Marine Corps and a vigorous athletic program.
The Academy is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It holds membership in the Southern Association of Independent Schools, the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools, and the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States.
